GOOD LUCK FISHING AND SEE YOU NEXT SEASON!
September 23, 2011

Fall is finally here, seems like it took awhile. Water temps are falling and last time out it was high 50’s up to 60 which is perfect for this time of year. The fish have been schooling up and when you find one you can usually run into a nice batch of fish.

I have been fishing Winnie the last few days, and with these hard south - southeast winds, the east shore has been good. Musky Bay, end of the rip rap, birches and up to High Banks has all been good. If you can handle the wind, Mallard, Stoney and some of the shallow rocks have been good also. Jig and minnow has been my choice of bait but I have seen lots of fish still being caught with a crawler. Whether you run it on a lindy or a spinner, they both have been working.

The perch have been in the shallow rocks also, and on a good day you can get bunches of perch and walleye all in the same area. So now is the time to get out there and get some fish before the weather really turns cold.

This will be it for my reports for the season, I hope I helped out in people putting more fish in the boat. If you have any questions let me know I will answer all I can, but now its hunting for me.

Good luck fishing and see you next season!

GRAND RAPIDS & DEER RIVER AREA FISHING
September 16, 2011

The last few days of very cold temperatures have certainly dropped the water temps. We saw the temperature drop down to the low 60’s. The fast drop has slowed the fishing on all species in this area. Once they make an adjustment to the cooler temps, the bite will be back on.

Starting to see signs of the jig-minnow combo being the go for presentation. Yesterday we marked a lot of fish on Big Winnie, both on the North and East shores, in 12 to 14 ft range. Getting them to bite was another story. We did pick up some with a spinner tip with a ½ crawler, and ¼ oz jig tip with a chub minnow.

Some crappies were also caught in Little Cut-Foot 15 to 17 ft, spinners, or jig minnow. Perch can be found on rocks humps the shallower the better, again jig-minnow.

FISHING LAKE WINNIE AND BOWSTRING
September 10, 2011

Our weather is the topic up here in the northland, hot, hot and more hot. The water temps are not going down. Despite that the walleyes are still doing ok on the bite, some days they go great, the next day you cant find one.

Winnie and Bowstring have been the lakes I've been on, and the fish (at least the ones I have been catching) have been shallow, mostly 6-12 ft around the weeds. If we get some wind, fishing around the rocks has been ok, but with no wind - look at the weeds. Our classic jig and minnow bite has only been producing with the wind, and without the wind, we have been trolling spinners or a short lindy with a crawler.

Trolling crankbaits has been a excellent producer of Northerns and a occasional walleye. I have been trolling the east shore of winnie and some of the deeper weed beds around the river channel. The crappies have been pretty decent too. they have all been the deep ones out in the deep holes off the shore. Look for them on your electronics, mark them and drop a 1/8 or 1/16th oz jig and a chub or little shinner down on top of their heads, sometimes you have to work them over a bit but you will get some to bite.

So there is lots to do this time of the year and you have to keep moving but you can find some nice mixed bags of fish.

Good luck fishing!

GRAND RAPIDS & DEER RIVER AREA FISHING
August 29, 2011

Walleye fishing is pretty much a typical for this time of year, fishing area lakes is a day by day, if you pick the right lake, fishing can be excellent, the next day just the opposite. No one presentation out doing the other at this time.

We're using crank baits, spinners tip with ½ crawler, leech, or chub minnow, I’ve been running all 3 to start with a,nd letting the fish tell me what they prefer on that day. Jig minnows are working on some deeper water fish, in lakes like Wabana, which are deep and clear.

Northern pike action has been very good on most all the area lakes, catch them from Jig Minnow on Pokegama, to spoons and cranks on Big Winnie.

Crappies are still a little slow, because the water temps are still in the mid 70’, cooler weather will change the bite quickly, but were still picking some up in deeper water 17 to 21 ft. around sunken structure, by dropping a 1/8 oz. jig tip with a minnow and vertical fishing.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR
August 22, 2011

The nights are cooling down and the water temps are starting to fall. The fish are starting to make their transition to the shallows. Most fish we have been catching have been around the weeds.

On Winnie the fish have been still on the flats of the big bars like bena, long or muskie. Using a spinner or a shad rap trolling around to find a bunch of fish has been working well yet. The edge of the weeds in the 9-12 ft of water on the north and west shore has also been working well. Again trolling shad raps or spinners and a leech has been the ticket.

Other area lakes, Bowstring and Sand Lake, have been producing some decent catches with the fish being caught in the 8-11 ft with a spinner being the best bet. The name of the game is still to cover ground to find the active fish. With this cooler weather look for the fish to school up more and more as the weather cools.

Good luck fishing!

SAND LAKE, BOWSTRING LAKE & BIG WINNIE
August 10, 2011

Fishing walleyes this first week of August, has been a very pleasant surprise, I’ve fished the 3 lakes above, and have done very well on all three.

The best presentation that worked for me was running spinners on all three lakes, either tip with a leech or half of a crawler, trolling about 1 mph along the weed lines on Sand Lake and Bowstring Lake, 7 to 13 ft depth.

Winnie, the magic depth was 12 to 13 feet. Using an 1/8 oz bullet sinker for 8 to 10 foot, then adding a 1/8 oz split shot when running 10 to 13 ft. When you feel a hit make sure you drop your rod tip back before setting the hook. Also these spinners are a great catch all presentation, meaning we're catching perch, northern pike, bass, & crappies along with the walleyes, it’s just a lot of fun.

Be safe have fun and enjoy a day on the water as this summer is flying by.

BOWSTRING & WINNIE LAKE
August 1, 2011

It’s the first of August already and the spinners are the choice of area guides. I have been on Bowstring and Winnie lake and the spinners have been the key.

Bowstring has a good shoreline bite in 7-10 ft with a sinner and a crawler, leech or minnow. put a 1/8 oz sinker on a spinner and start going around the shoreline it has been working pretty good. There is also fish out on the deeper humps and bars on Bowstring being caught with a lindy and a crawler.

Winnie has a good bite going on top of the big bars. Bena muskie long bar all have fish on them with the best being on top of the bars right on the edge trolling along with a spinner again. there is also fish out on the other humps and the main drop running spinners or lindy’s is the key there also. The perch are on the rocks and be caught with a jig and minnow.

So for August the fishing isnt just too bad so get out and do some fishing
Good luck fishing!

BIG WINNIE
July 23, 2011

Spent all of last week on Big Winnie, many due to heat had a lot of the smaller areas shutdown. Fishing over all was not fast but steady.

Look for walleyes on Winnibigoshish along any of the big bars, Bena, Moses, and Musky and Long bar, manly on the breaks 17 to 21 feet. Also look for walleye on the northern part of the lake on sand humps and Zoomer bar. I have been running rigs with 6 to 7 foot snells, tip with either a leech or crawler. I’ve been using at the start 50/50 choice, and letting the fish tell me what one they prefer on this given day, as each day it has changed for me.

You’ll find perch action just about anywhere you can fine some rocks. Crank baits are picking up a few northern, walleye and perch in 10 to 13 foot range

Have fun and be safe.

WINNIE LAKE
July 15, 2011

Here we go again on a round of heat get ready. Its been nice the last few days with the clouds and a bit of rain to cool things down. Winnie has been decent we have been on the tops of the big bars running rigs and spinners right along the top and the very top edge. Its nothing fast and furious just keep cruising along and pick up a fish here and there. There are still some fish on the smaller humps and you can get them to bite also with a lindy rig and leech or crawler. The perch have been biting with a jig and minnow on the deeper rocks in that 10-14 ft of water and they have been dandy’s.

Sand was alright with the clouds and wind, we got the fish in 11-14 ft of water and jigs and minnows. The fish have been on the edges of the bigger flats. The perch have also been a real bonus on sand this year. we have been catching them with the Walleyes and right on top of the flats.

Good luck fishing!

DEER RIVER/GRAND RAPIDS FISHING REPORT
July 13, 2011

The May Fly hatch of last week has come and gone, fishing walleyes has improved the last few day. Rigs tipped with crawlers, seems to work better over the leech. Run spinners in shallower water on windy, cloudy days, it also work well, tip with a ½ crawler.

Crank baits are starting to show signs of life. Running #5 shad raps. Perch are going pretty strong, look for them around 15 ft rock piles, jig minnow best presentation. Bass are also biting on the area bass lake. I like casting a jig and leech and pull down the drop.

Have fun and be safe.

WINNIE LAKE
July 7, 2011

Wow what a change in weather from cold to hot in about a week, and water temps have jumped right up too. They went from 68 to 75 real quick. The mayflies have been hatching around area lakes by the droves and the fishing has been kinda tough.

Have been fishing the humps and bars on Winnie the last couple days and when the water was cooler I could see them on the graph and they would bite, now some will bite so it has slowed. I have been using leeches and crawlers with a lindy rig with a 4-6 ft snell. I still throw on a jig and minnow out in that deep water and it still has been producing a few fish also.

I was at Bowstring Lake this last week and fishing was just ok. The fish were out on the deeper humps where there is only a 2-3 ft difference from bottom to the top of the hump. most fish were right on an edge. There were some fish on the flats on the south end also.

Ballclub Lake was a good choice for me one day and I went there looking for Northerns and Perch. It was a little slower than normal but there were very few times we went more than 5-10 minutes without a fish. Jig and minnow is the best choice for Ballclub is a 1/8 oz jig and minnow with a 20 lb leader to help land the Northerns.

Good luck fishing!

DEER RIVER/GRAND RAPIDS FISHING REPORT
July 5, 2011

The water temps in area lakes has finally reach the high sixties, which is putting this years May Fly hatch in full swing. This mean to me that you want to switch over to leech's and crawlers as your best baits for walleyes. Look for walleyes around mud humps as they will be feeding on the May fly as they hatch, The key to fishing these fish is to fish the walleye as slow as possible, you can't fish too slow, for these well fed fish.

Also the larger Northern pike will be found on these deeper mid lake structures. I like to jig these deeper pike, and you pick up some nice perch in the process.

On days when the wind is too strong to fish mid lake structure, the cabbage weed beds will always be holding a few fish of all species. I like to run spinners or jig these fish. When running spinners only use a 1/16 or 1/8 oz. bullet weights, you don't want the spinner to drag the bottom.

Have fun and be safe.

DEER RIVER/GRAND RAPIDS FISHING REPORT
June 27, 2011

All the rain and cool temps have kept the water temps in the low 60’s, making the jig minnow bite hanging in as still one of the top presentations. Rigs, tip with either a leech or crawler have been a good second choice.

The fish are making their move out to deeper structure, and there has been signs of first may fly hatch. I’m thinking after our next few days of warm weather, you’ll see the first hatch. Then the rig bite will be in full swing.

On the area lakes the bite is having mood swings, along with the weather, great bite one day go back the next and you work for everything you get. When we get a few days of stable weather the bite should be as good as you can expect for this time of year.

Have fun and be safe.

WINNIE LAKE
June 20, 2011

I don’t think we are going to see summer this year. Temps on the water are staying right around that 63 degrees, and they don’t seem to change. I was on Winnie the last couple days and the fishing is still holding up pretty good, Our biggest problem is catching the fish under the slot to keep.Tthere are lots of 18-23 inch fish biting right now and its been a great time.

The fish have really been showing up on the north bars and small humps. I have been catching them on the edges in the 22-24 ft of water. You can still get by with a jig and minnow and there is an ample supply of shiners still available. I have been using a 3/8 oz northland gumball jig out deep like that and it has been really turning on the fish. You can use a rig with a 4-6 ft snell and a leech or crawler if you choose, they have been biting on that also but you know me, I love that jigging.

There are still some fish in the shallows, with a good wind blowing you will get them to bite and the shallow rocks have been the same. So get out there if you can handle the weather, the fish are still going strong.

Good luck fishing!

STILL GOOD WALLEYE FISHING
June 11, 2011

The shallow water walleye bite 7 to 12 feet is still going strong on area lakes, Big Winnie, Bowstring Lake, Sand Lake and Big Island Lake. They have all been very good this past week.

I expect it to continue throughout the next week or so. Jig's and Shiner's are still the preferred presentation. Water temps are in the mid 60's which means that it's time for the pan fish to spawn. Look for crappies around pencil reeds and rocks. Tossing spinner bait have been an effective presentation. Bass action also has been very good on area lakes.

Have fun and be safe.

GRAND RAPIDS/WINNIE LAKE
June 8, 2011

Finally a little nice weather up here and the fish seem to love it. It has been a good bite the last few days around the area. Winnie has the shiners moving in more and more to the shallows. The lake is going well right now, with the fish in shallow from 6-0 ft of water. Where the wind is blowing into or adjacent is usually the best but when the fish are ready they seem to bite everywhere. From Ravens, stoney, rock pile to muskey bay, highbanks and the dishes it's all good right now. 1/8 oz northland fireball or gumball have been working the best tipped with a shiner.

Other area lakes have been good also. Bowstring, Sand and Island lake have been the lakes we have been fishing. The fish on Bowstring have been going pretty steady lately. We have been getting them in shallow as well as deep. On the shoreline in 5-8 ft and on the main break in 12-19 ft a jiig and a shiner have been the best presentation has been the best so far.

Get out there right now this bite will only last so long and things will start to change soon.

Good luck fishing!

WINTER DOESN'T WANT TO LET GO
May 31, 2011

This cool weather is keeping the water temps in the mid to high 50”s. For us jig fishermen that's all fine and dandy, as cooler water will prolong the jig and minnow bite, but the water's are slowly creeping upward despite the cool windy weather were having. Which will be turning on many of area lakes which haven’t been producing in the past couple weeks.

Look for most fish shallow, the walleye will still be chasing the shiner run, for a week or so. Bass still will be on deep break lines, till the water warms a little more to build there beds. Crappies will be staging out in deeper water in front of their spawning area.

Big Winnie still is the hot bite in the area, Leech Lake needs a few more warmer days, before it lights up. Jig tip with a shiner is still preferred bait at this time, for just about all of area species.

Have fun and be safe.

TAKE A MOMENT
May 26th, 2011

Memorial weekend is here already, wow where does the time go. Before we go out today lets take a moment and remember those who are and have served for our country to give us our freedoms and say a prayer for them all.

Fishing has been Great up here. This week I have been mostly on Winnibigosh. The bite has really turned on with most of the fish being caught in that 6-9 ft range. When we had that east wind the north shore from the dugouts all the way to stoney was great fishing, Tamarack Bay was good as was the west shore. Once the North winds came we were at Tamarack Bay and up by Ravens and did well also.

So wherever the wind is blowing you look for that shore adjacent or blowing into and you will do well. I have been using a 1/8 oz Northland fireball or gumball jig with a shiner, you can get away with using a chub we caught some with those too, but why, the shiners are in good supply and I like them. I have been seeing a lot of boats out here with a 10-15 mile an hour wind with a wind sock to slow them down? I have found for the most part with winds in this range are just right with no need to slow down.

Leech Lake has been another one of our go to places for lots of fish. Sometimes the hard part is finding keepers but that will change as we get going. Same jig and minnow presentation and depths as winnie.

I am thinking Memorial weekend should be a great weekend to fish so get out there and wet a line.

Good luck fishing!

FISHING AREA LAKES IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA
May 18th, 2011

The second weekend started off with a bang, on some area lakes, like Big Winnie, and Upper Red Lake. Big Winnie we found fish all along the north shore 7 to 10 foot range, perch are also showing up shallow in good numbers, using Jig shiner, but rainbow chubs are a good second choice, which seems to be the best all around presentation, although leeches seem be a good third choice for walleyes.

Took a trip up to upper Red Lake, which is the hot lake at this time, lots of walleye in all sizes, 7 to 9 ft. around rocks seem to be the best spots, jig minnow is all you need. Leech Lake is also starting to turn on, the water temps are finally getting to the upper to mid 50's which we need, for the hot bite.
Have fun and be safe.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Leech Lake Fishing Opener
May 18th, 2011

Opening of fishing season finally made it, it seemed like a long spring this year. We opened on Leech lake this year after 40 years of opening on Cass lake quite a change for most of our party. The fishing was great on Saturday. Most fish were caught around the rocks by sugar point and battle point in the morning then we headed toward federal dam in the afternoon and caught a bunch in the sand. Sunday was a bit tough seemed like the fish just disappeared on the spots we caught them on the day before and we had to look hard to find a fish Sunday. Most fish were caught on a 1/8 oz fireball or a gumball made by northland tackle, tipped with a shiner or a chub.

Winnie was another good lake we been fishing the east side in the Tamarac bay area. Mostly in the 8-10 ft of water with 1/8 oz gumballs and fireballs. They have been fishing in front of high banks, stoney and ravens also. The shiners are really starting to move in right now with some of this warmer weather so the fishing should just keep getting better.

Good luck fishing!
